American Cultures & Global Contexts Center

Situated in the English Department, the American Cultures and Global Contexts Center builds upon the considerable strengths in American Studies at UCSB by offering an interdisciplinary setting for new research and teaching initiatives. Equipped with a small library of key resources in the field and computing equipment to support web-based research, this Center provides a unique site for collaborations among faculty and students.

Carsey-Wolf Center for Film, Television, and New Media

This new interdisciplinary Center brings together faculty from the humanities, arts, and social sciences to teach and conduct research about all forms of mass media, placing the study of film, television, and new media in the context of a rigorous and broad-based liberal arts education.

Center for Cold War Studies

Founded in 1994 and based in the Department of History, the Center for Cold War Studies presents annual conferences, lectures and workshops, and provides on-line resources for historians of diplomatic history. The Center is committed to promoting discussion and the exchange of ideas on topics related to the Cold War.

Center for Galician Studies
Housed in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, the center’s mission is to disseminate Galician Language and Culture through a yearly series of Lectures on Galician Studies, and its growing library collection, and also courses focusing on Galician Language and Literature.

Center for Interdisciplinary Study of Music (CISM)

The UCSB Department of Music founded the CISM in 2000. The Center's goal is to bring together scholars, researchers, and the general public through special events, interdisciplinary curricula, and online resources, exploring music in all its facets.  

Center for Portuguese Studies

João Camilo-dos- Santos, Director
The Center provides support for teaching and degree programs and promotes the study of literatures, language and cultures of the Portuguese-speaking world. The Center actively awards student scholarships and stipends, sponsors the Summer Institute in Portuguese, hosts colloquia, maintains the Center library, and sponsors publications.

Center for Research in Electronic Art Technology (CREATE)

The Center for Research in Electronic Art Technology was established in 1986, and is situated within the Department of Music. CREATE serves as a productive environment available to students, researchers, and media artists for the realization of music and multimedia works.

Center for the Study of Work, Labor, and Democracy
Nelson Lichtenstein, Director
The Center for the Study of Work, Labor, and Democracy is a research and eductional unit at UCSB; housed within the Interdisciplinary Humanities Center. It explores today, and in the past, the ideological and political relationship between the character of our working lives, the public and corporate policies that shape employment norms, and the possibility for democracy, both at the workplace and in the larger polity.

Center for Taiwan Studies
Kuo-ching Tu, Director
The Center for Taiwan Studies (CTS) promotes Taiwan-related scholarly activities in the humanities, fine arts, and other cultural areas in an academic venue in the United States. It provides a forum for the public and a vehicle to meet the professional interests of faculty and students from a variety of disciplines by supporting collaborative programs involving visiting writers and scholars, hosting conferences, publishing Taiwan literature in English translation, and by encouraging interdisciplinary scholarship and Taiwan-related campus activities.

Consortium for Literature, Theory, and Culture

While grounded in the study of national literary traditions, the Consortium seeks to encourage interdisciplinary and theoretical reflections on literature and culture in global and comparative contexts. Through graduate curricula, research projects, colloquia, and lectures, the Consortium encourages dialogue among faculty and students from various departments.

Early Modern Center
Patricia Fumerton, Director
The Early Modern Center is the UCSB English Department's locus for students and faculty working in sixteenth- through eighteenth-century studies. The EMC has a seminar room, reference library, and networked computers with access to the latest research databases. The Center offers courses, conferences, and special events annually and supports collaborative on-line projects, including an extensive picture gallery with slideshow feature and an NEH-funded archive of the collected ballads of Samuel Pepys.

InField, Institute on Field Linguistics and Language Documentation

InField is an opportunity for linguists, graduate students in linguistics, and native speakers of minority languages to receive training in a range of skills needed to document, maintain, and/or revitalize minority languages. InField will be divided into two parts: a two-week session of workshops on a range of topics related to language documentation, maintenance, and revitalization, followed by a four-week session of Field Training, an intensive course similar to a doctoral course on field methods, where students will utilize the skills taught in the workshops.

Interdisciplinary Humanities Center

The Interdisciplinary Humanities Center was founded in 1987 with the goal of bridging disciplinary divides in the humanities and encouraging collaboration across the humanities, arts, and social sciences. The center sponsors a wide variety of interdisciplinary courses, seminars, research projects, lectures, and conferences.

Late Antiquity Multi-Campus Research Group
The Multi-Campus Research Group on "History and Culture of Late Antiquity" was constituted in 1999, with funds from the UC President's Office. It unites the greatest concentration of scholars in this field on the West Coast, and currently has 20 graduate students writing dissertations and over 50 who select Late Antiquity as a field in their qualifying exams. The MRG creates a regular infrastructure of academic exchange between UC campuses for graduate students and faculty. It instructs graduate students in a variety of sub-disciplines and provides them with pre-professional training for the academic job market. It encourages shared and collaborative research of faculty and graduate students through regular meetings. And it addresses undergraduate students and the larger community through lectures and outreach activities.

Microcosms

Microcosms: Objects of Knowledge is a multiyear, interdisciplinary project that seeks to research comprehensively a material "economy of knowledge" within the university. We will plan and mount a series of exhibitions and symposia throughout the UC system, produce publications, then propose policy directives on the use and expansion of UC collections.

Poetics@UCSB

This visiting series features poets, artists, and scholars whose work rethinks the mission and practice of poetry/poetics in the age of media, globalization, and multilingualism. It explores poetry's relations to a variety of issues and disciplines, including art, architecture, digital media, science, music, history, ethics, philosophy, anthropology, performance, linguistics, education, and translation. It foregrounds poetics as a condition for social, cultural, historical, and scientific imagination.

Public History Program
Randy Bergstrom, Director
Founded by the History Department in 1976 with the goal of training students to apply their historical knowledge in public settings, the Program sponsors lectures, public programming, special curricula, and student internships in partnership with community organizations. In conjunction with the National Council for Public History, the program publishes The Public Historian.

Subaltern-Popular Workshop - Multi-campus Research Group

This Multi-campus Research Group facilitates and promotes research and understanding of the subaltern -- the disenfranchised, and the popular, as subjects and modes of inquiry into culture and history. By disclosing the presence of the disenfranchised in everyday cultural formations, our effort is to change the way we study and teach history and culture, and to re-evaluate the role of the humanities and arts in the politics of globalization and the nation-state.

Transcriptions Project: The Cultures of Information

The Transcriptions Project is an NEH-funded research and curricular development initiative focused on the digital humanities. Started in 1998 by the Department of English, it studies the relation between literary study and the cultures of information, with the goal of understanding the Information Age in historical and humanistic contexts. Transcriptions develops curricula and sponsors lectures, workshops, and conferences.

Transliteracies - Multi-campus Research Group

Established in 2005, this multi-campus research group includes scholars in the humanities, social sciences, and engineering from the University of California system (and in the future other research programs). It will establish working groups to study online reading from different perspectives; bring those groups into conjunction behind a shared technology development initiative; publish research and demonstration software; and train graduate students working at the intersections of the humanistic, social, and technological disciplines.

University of California Research in the Arts (UCIRA)

The UCIRA provides grants to arts faculty and students for projects with the potential for significant artistic and cultural impact. We support projects that are innovative, experimental, and risk-taking in their approach to form and/or content. These may include exhibitions, performances, symposia, outreach efforts, and projects that are multidisciplinary in approach. As artistic endeavors of the highest professional caliber, UCIRA projects frequently reach audiences outside the university and involve artists and scholars from around the world. As the only state-wide organization representing the arts on the nine campuses of the UC system, UCIRA also provides information and advocacy for university-based arts education and research.

Voice of the Shuttle

Started in 1994 as a suite of static web pages, VoS has now been rebuilt as a database that serves content dynamically on the Web. Its mission has been to provide a structured and briefly annotated guide to online resources that at once respects the established humanities disciplines in their professional organization and points toward the transformation of those disciplines as they interact with the sciences and social sciences and with new digital media.

Walter H. Capps Center for the Study of Ethics, Religion, and Public Life

The Capps Center is a place where the crucial issues of moral values, beliefs, and ethics can be addressed through intelligent debate and conversation. Named in honor of former UCSB Professor of Religious Studies and US Representative Walter Capps, the Center sponsors community programming in collaboration with local organizations, hosts lectures and conferences, visiting fellows, and sponsors internships at the UC Washington Center.

Workshop on American Indigenous Languages
The annual Workshop on American Indigenous Languages (WAIL) is presented by the Native American Indian Languages study group (NAIL) and has been meeting regularly in Santa Barbara since 1990 to discuss issues relating to Native American language and culture. WAIL is sponsored by the UCSB Linguistics Department.
